Dylan Playfair Q&A with Feeling the Vibe
Descendants 2 comes out this summer on July 21st. What was the audition process like?
The audition process for D2 was faster for me than a lot of prior projects. I had to self tape from my hotel in Toronto, as I was working on a show in Canada at the time. I got a phone call from Judy Taylor and was given some notes for another tape. Two weeks later, I was booked to play Gil! Then the fun began.
What was your reaction when you got the part of Gil?
I was ecstatic! It has been a long time dream of mine to act in the Disney universe and the opportunity to be a part of such special heritage was amazing. I am playing Gaston’s kid! How cool is that!?
How are you and Gil alike and different?
Gil and I are both much like Golden Retrievers. We are loyal and fun loving. I like to imagine myself a lot less Pirate like than Gil… I think that is where we are the most different!
Any funny stories you’d like to share from the set of Descendants 2?
When we were filming a scene where one of the main characters has to walk the plank, the actors kept wanting to make it as real as possible. That turned the safety mats into crash pads for about 9 takes… it looked pretty hilarious on camera watching these guys inch towards the edge over and over and fall out of frame over and over. Eventually I think they ended up tying them down with harnesses, so they were not tempted to jump into the foam pit during every take!
You’ve gone to school in both Vancouver and LA. What are the similarities and differences of life in both cities/countries?
LA is much bigger than Vancouver. Both cities have a ton to offer in terms of film and TV, but I think Vancouver is a highly condensed version of LA. If I had it my way, it would be summers in Vancouver winters in LA. That was you get the best of both worlds. That said, I spend most of my time where ever the show I am on is filming, so that keeps my life in suitcases most of the year.
If you weren’t acting, what would you be doing?
Directing. Or taking classes to get better at acting, so I could act.
Does anyone else in your family act or sing? If so, who?
My mom comes from a family of country artists and herself is a singer. My brother Austyn is in fashion school in Vancouver and my brother Jackson plays college hockey. My family is quite talented!
What is your background/nationality?
I’m 6th generation Canadian, so that’s pretty deep in my blood. My ancestors come from Scotland, England, and Romania.
Do you have any vacations planned this summer?
Yes! I’m planning to go to our family Cottage in Northern BC Canada. We have a place on the lake!
What’s next for you after Descendants 2?
After D2 I’m working on season 3 of Letterkenny on Crave TV and finishing up season 2 of Travelers on Netflix. After that it is back to the hunt, looking for the next exciting movie or TV show to be a part of! I love the thrill of work and the excitement of looking for it as well.
