NBC is giving audiences all the nostalgia they could want with a reboot of the hit 80’s sitcom, Punky Brewster. Even better? Original series star Soleil Moon Frye is back in her titular role! Keep reading below for all the details on NBC’s Punky Brewster reboot!
For those that weren’t born in the 80’s, or have maybe only heard the name, but don’t know of the show – here’s a little recap on the fun family sitcom that was Punky Brewster.
The show centered around a young girl named Penelope “Punky” Brewster (Soleil Moon Frye) who was raised by a foster parent (George Gaynes). Viewers followed Punky as she navigated her new home, while making new friends like Cherie (Cherie Johnson).
While the series ran for two seasons on NBC (1984-1986), it produced two more seasons in syndication, until 1988, for a total of 88 episodes.
The Punky Brewster reboot will feature Soleil Moon Frye (who recently starred in the Lifetime movie Staging Christmas) as Punky Brewster, all grown-up, of course. The 10-episode series will follow Punky as a single mom who’s trying to get her life back on track. She then meets Izzy, a foster kid who reminds Punky a lot of herself when she was younger.
Izzy will be portrayed by Quinn Copeland; and Freddie Prinze Jr. will play Punky’s ex-husband for the pilot episode. Good news for fans of the original series: Cherie Johnson will reprise her role as Punky’s BFF, Cherie in the reboot!
No Good Nick star Lauren Lindsey Donzis will play Hannah, Punky’s style-savvy teenage daughter; while Noah Cottrell and Oliver De Los Santos have been cast as Punky’s adopted sons, Diego and Daniel, according to Just Jared Jr.
Lauren Donzis posted this announcement on her Instagram page. She wrote, “I am beyond excited for this new journey to come!!! so grateful that we got picked up by peacock! i can’t wait for you all to meet hannah and the rest of the punky crew.“
Soleil herself shared her excitement about the reboot in a super-sweet Instagram post. She begins, “I am so thrilled to be on this journey. This process has been so truly magical.” See the full message below:
We can’t wait to see Punky as a mom – we bet she’ll be great with Izzy, Hannah, Daniel, and Diego!
While there’s no release date for the series yet, NBC’s Peacock app is set for an April 2020 debut, so we’ll be getting new shows sooner than we think!
