Not a cop, not a lawyer – just as badass. That’s how ABC describes the titular character of their new television series, Rebel. Katey Sagal portrays an unconventional, rule-bending crusader who’s on the warpath to justice. While she’s juggling her career, she’s also a mother, and ex-wife, which comes with its own share of turmoil. Based off Erin Brockovich’s life/work, executive producer Krista Vernoff is excited the show’s “striking a tone that isn’t on TV right now.” So, what can be expected from this fresh drama?
We’ve got all the details, from the cast and plot, to the series trailer and pilot photos below.
Rebel follows Annie “Rebel” Bello (Katey Sagal), who, despite not having a law degree, is the most fearless blue collar legal advocate. She fights endlessly for the causes she knows are important, and will do anything for the people she cares for. Annie’s married to her third husband Grady (John Corbett), and has three adult kids: Cassidy (Lex Scott Davis), Nate (Kevin Zegers), and Ziggy (Ariela Barer).
Attempting to work with the force of nature that is Rebel is bossman Julian Cruz (Andy Garcia), while Luke Chapman (Sam Palladio) is competing with her in the courtroom. From her personal life, she’ll enlist the help of her former sister-in-law Lana (Tamala Jones), and second ex-husband, Benji (James Lesure). As lines between personal and professional begin to cross, there’s obviously some work tension and family drama that will unfold.
Based on the trailer, Rebel is a no-nonsense woman who, according to portrayer Katey Sagal, “will go to any lengths to get what she needs to get.” She also noted that “the voice of somebody that is loud and makes herself heard is very necessary.” Her character is bold and takes no BS.
According to ABC’s official press release, the pilot revolves around Rebel’s fight against Stonemore Medical, as she tries to convince Cruz to join in the battle. At the same time, she recruits Cassidy and Lana to help protect a woman against an abusive boyfriend. Meanwhile on the home front, her husband Grady tries to pick up the pieces while she’s out saving the world.
The previously mentioned main cast are included in the first episode. Guest stars in the pilot include: Camille Chen, Michael Glave, Daniella Garcia, Mo McRae, Leif Gantvoort, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Shirley Jordan, Mary McDonnell, and Adam Arkin.
